School of Nursing Capping and Candle Lighting Ceremony

This event is a traditional ceremony and harkens back to the origins of professional nursing as established by Florence Nightingale in the mid-19th century. The ceremony honors second-year students as they begin the hospital-training that is part of their program. The traditional nurses cap is badge of honor and the candle lighting is symbolic of the lamp that Nightingale famously carried while caring for soldiers in field hospitals.
