RESEMBID & UCCI Marketing & Communications Campaign

PROJECT NAME Renewable Energy and Sustainable Development Planning for The University College of the Cayman Islands
PROJECT LOCATION Cayman Islands (Grand Cayman, Little Cayman, Cayman Brac)
PROJECT DURATION   Eight (8) months (April 2023 – April 2024)
IMPLEMENTATION PARTNERS University College of the Cayman Islands (UCCI), Resilience, Sustainable Energy and Marine Biodiversity (RESEMBID).
DONOR Resilience, Sustainable Energy and Marine Biodiversity Programme (RESEMBID)

VISION & MISSION: The University College of the Cayman Islands (UCCI) aims to provide higher learning that contributes to the Cayman Islands and global societies by advancing knowledge and developing innovative graduates through educational, cultural, and social institutions activities. Through its strategic partnership with RESEMBID, it will be supported in this mission by creating sustainable human development efforts in Resilience, Sustainable Energy, and Marine Biodiversity.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION: RESEMBID has committed to funding a 12-months programme that supports the sustainable human development efforts of the Caribbean Overseas Countries and Territories (OCTs), which includes the Cayman Islands. The University College of the Cayman Islands intends to serve as a model of a sustainable campus and will improve public environmental education and awareness of sustainability.

The conversion from traditional energy sources to sustainable energy and conservation management is a pressing issue throughout the Caribbean. UCCI wishes to position itself as a key player in leading the change.

UCCI will move toward leading sustainability efforts in the region by developing a sustainability plan with the expected outcome of responsible resource consumption and improved use of renewable energy technologies among the campus and its students.

WHAT DOES THE PROJECT INCLUDE?

  • Comprehensive Environmental Sustainability Plan (CESP) and ASHRAE level 2 energy audit
  • Energy efficiency measures in 5 buildings on the UCCI campus
  • Establishing a 150 kW DC solar array for Sir Vassel Hall
  • UCCI campus becoming a ‘Living Laboratory’ which informs a Digital Library of data published real time on a dedicated website
  • Developing sustainable energy knowledge and environmentally friendly practices among students and the public

WHO ARE OUR AUDIENCES?

The audiences for the Renewable Energy and Sustainable Development Planning project at The University College of the Cayman Islands include:

  1. Local community: Engaging and educating the local community in the Cayman Islands about renewable energy and sustainable development initiatives.
  2. Regional Caribbean community: Reaching out to individuals and organizations across the Caribbean region who are interested in accessing and utilizing the data housed in the digital library.
  3. Government: Collaborating with government officials and departments to promote and implement renewable energy and sustainable development policies and initiatives.
  4. Sustainability companies and partners: Engaging with companies and organizations specializing in sustainability to foster partnerships and support for the project.
  5. Schools and educational institutions across the Caribbean: Sharing knowledge and resources with schools and educational institutions to promote sustainable practices and renewable energy education.
  6. Companies within the sector such as Caribbean Utilities Company (CUC): Involving industry stakeholders and companies operating in the renewable energy sector to gather expertise, support, and potential partnerships.

It is crucial to note that the Digital Library is intended to have long-lasting usage and significance across the region. Therefore, efforts should be made to ensure that it remains functional, relevant, and visible even after the project ends. This may involve seeking contingency plans and resources to keep the Digital Library updated and accessible beyond the project's duration.
