Course Name:BASIC MATHEMATICS REFRESHER COURSE
Duration:5-week course with 2 x 2-hour classes per week. Total = 20

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course deals with the nuts and bolts of Mathematics. Students will become equipped with a solid foundation of the mathematical tools required to solve more complex mathematical operations - learning to understand addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; knowing how to calculate and move among decimals, fractions and percentages; figuring out ratios and proportions. This course would benefit any student (regardless of age) who requires help understanding basic math skills in order to pass a placement test, a course, a specific job, or as a review to brush up on math skills. Lessons will focus on the steps involved in adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing as well as the order of operations. In addition, this course will include the various forms of numbers such as fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios and proportion, and also equations and formulae in a business context.

Credits: 0

Prerequisite: None

COURSE OBJECTIVES

This course intends to enable the student to:

  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers and solve application problems using whole numbers.
  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions and solve applications problems using fractions.
  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals and solve application problems using decimals.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of ratio and proportion and their applications.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of percentages and solve percentage application problems.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and use the order of operations.
  • Evaluate a variable expression given the values for the variables.
  • Simplify a variable expression by collecting like terms.
  • Solve simple linear equations.
  • Estimate a “reasonable” answer to an application problem.
  • Display several standard problem-solving techniques involving ratio and proportion.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the study skills necessary for success in mathematics courses
