UCCI online orientation a must for new students

It may be delivered online, but it will still be engaging, informative and fun. That’s what officials at the University College of the Cayman Islands are saying about plans to hold the school’s annual new student orientation in a virtual format. It is the first time in the campus’ 45-year history, this has been done.

Three orientation sessions will be held Aug. 20 and 21 to provide new students with information vital to navigating the campus, accessing support services and understanding the necessary course and administrative requirements. Virtual New Student Orientation is mandatory for all new students.

While UCCI is planning to bring students back to the classroom for fall classes, it shifted to online instruction in March due to Covid-19 related restrictions. The online orientation was planned in light of those same restrictions.

Students will not only have the chance to interact with presenters, get a virtual tour of the campus, engage with classmates, vote on a new mascot, participate in games, and win a variety of prizes. Officials are strongly urging incoming students to attend their respective sessions. Parents and guardians are also encouraged to sit in.

Before attending the virtual orientation, students should make sure they have finished the admissions process and registered for classes.

To register for an orientation session, visit www.ucci.edu.ky/nso. Once registered, students will receive a link to join a specific session. Those sessions are as follows:

  • Thursday, Aug. 20, 6 p.m., for adult learners (students 21+ yrs.). The two-hour session will include an introduction to Student Life and a presentation and Q&A session hosted by the registrar.
  • Friday, Aug. 21, 9 a.m., for new students. This 3½-hour session will include an introduction to the university and Student Life, a virtual tour and presentations from the information technology department, alumni and department chairs.
  • Friday, Aug. 21, 2:30 p.m., for dual enrollment students. A two-hour session will include an introduction to Student Life, a presentation and Q&A session hosted by the registrar and the Dual Enrolment programme coordinator.

Dual enrolment students must attend the Aug. 21, 9 a.m. session. Adult learners are encouraged to attend if they can do so. All new students are expected to attend orientation.

Each session will feature a welcome from UCCI President and CEO Stacy McAfee. Department chairs will also be holding sessions to provide more information specific to students’ areas of study.
