Are you Prepared for the 2019 Hurricane Season?

Are you Prepared for the 2019 Hurricane Season?

Hurricane season 2019 is here. The University College of the Cayman Islands is aiming to ensure all students and faculty are prepared for the season. The 2019 Atlantic Hurricane Season began on June 1st and will run through November 30th. Early forecasts for the season are calling for above average activity in terms of actual named tropical storms and hurricanes.

When it comes to hurricanes in the Cayman Islands, the relevant question is not “if,” it is “when.” So, the best bet is to be prepared as early as possible. As the 2017 and 2018 Hurricane Seasons have shown, a hurricane can cause widespread damage. A category 1 hurricane can cause extensive property damage with wind, water and storm surge, and the impact only gets worse as a hurricane intensifies.

Everyone should know their risk for hurricanes and take steps to prepare. To ensure that our campus is prepared for the season, we have prepared a comprehensive hurricane resource page ( Our goal is to help people think ahead, plan, and stay informed throughout the season.

The webpage and guide are filled with information that allows Parents, Students and Faculty to be fully prepared for the season.

To help with your preparations we recommend:

  • Visiting our Hurricane Prepared Webpage and know your risk of hurricanes, and what preparations you will require.
  • Plan ahead with our Hurricane Guide – know what you’ll do if a hurricane could impact your area, how to contact your family, and any community emergency plans.
  • Get connected to know the university policies in the event of a storm. Create a supply kit with the student prepared checklist.
  • We recommend that you follow the guidance of your local officials and check media and weather reports via official sources, including social media.
    • Based on your location and community plans, make your own plans for evacuation or sheltering in place. Become familiar with your evacuation zone, the evacuation route and shelter locations by visiting

We are committed to ensuring the safety of everyone on island especially our students and campus.  Know your risk, get prepared, and stay informed are just a few steps you can take to get ready for hurricane season.
