In the Cayman Islands, the current transformation of the economy has altered the economic landscape. In particular, the tourism and hospitality industry has taken on a growing importance in the local economy. In preparing students for this new socio-economic environment, SHS aims at providing students with a solid foundation of knowledge about the industry by offering the Associate of Applied Science Degree in Hospitality Management.
Blending theory and real-world experiences, the new curriculum provides opportunities to explore the complex nature of the tourism and hospitality industry and its intricate relationship with other disciplines such as Management, Planning and the the Global Marketplace.
Through this programme, the SHS enables those who have a strong interest in this field to pursue further studies in the area. The profile of tourism and hospitality education, especially at tertiary level, is growing at a phenomenal rate globally. In Cayman, recent developments such as the opening of a Kimpton branded hotel in 2016 will add a significant number of jobs and create the need for suitably qualified persons to fill these positions.
The social aspect of tourism and hospitality education will help students to develop a sense of ethical responsibility and a healthy hospitality culture. This is important in helping the community, the nation and the world to achieve the common goal of global sustainable development, and is also important to the personal development of students.
The study of tourism and hospitality also provides opportunities for students to develop their general intellectual capacities for life-long learning. For example, it promotes communication skills, interpersonal skills, information processing skills, problem solving skills and decision-making skills. SHS, capitalising on the opportunities arising from a dynamic tourism and hospitality industry in the Cayman Islands, will help students recognize the importance of being self-motivated problem-solvers and life-long learners.
