MASTERS DEGREE IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (pMBA)

The Professional MBA offered through UCCI’s Executive Training Centre is a graduate programme that seeks to enhance the skills of persons currently, or aspiring to work in the field of management. The MBA is designated a Professional MBA with a focus on applied research.

The degree allows persons to focus research in one of the following areas:

  • Finance & Accounting
  • Offshore Financial Services
  • Human Resource Management
  • Administration in Public and Private Enterprise
  • International Marketing

The program consists of three modules offered over an 18-month period. Successful completion of all three modules will entitle a student to be awarded the Professional Master’s Degree in Business Administration.

    (October – July)

    Module 1 consists of two courses;

    • The Executive Certificate in Management (9 credits)
    • Research Methods in Business & Management (3 credits)

    Executive Certificate in Management
    (8 month course commencing in October each year)

    The Executive Certificate in Management is presented jointly by the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto, and the University College of the Cayman Islands. The program provides participants with the knowledge and skills relevant to management in all forms of private and public enterprise. The eight management topics are presented as intensive sessions over a weekend period (Friday/Saturday) once every month and are designed to minimize time away from work.

    Course Description

    • Leadership and Management
      • This course reviews the major theories of leadership and the skills and behaviors which are required for managers to become successful leaders. In addition to reviewing theory, the course will also provide a number of skill-building sessions through the use of case studies and simulations of leadership challenges and solutions.

    • Project Management and Business Improvement
      • This course reviews the essentials of both project management and continuous business improvement, followed by a team exercise to use this learning with practical applications to participants’ own organizations.

    • International Trade and Economics
      • This course presents a review of the major factors in economics and social policies which are associated with growth of an economy and attractiveness of an economy for foreign investment. The course is completed with discussion of policy options which governments can choose to improve social institutions and the international competitiveness of a country.

    • International Accounting and Finance
      • This course provides an overview of internal accounting analysis and control systems, as well as a review of the operations of external finance and capital markets, so that students will obtain a high level of financial acumen as part of their executive knowledge.

    • International Marketing
      • This course reviews the major aspects of marketing strategy for impact in the marketplace, particularly for marketing aimed at international markets. As well as reviewing essentials of consumer psychology, the course reviews the effectiveness of various types of marketing media and message in terms of impact on the intended market.

    • Business Strategy
      • This course reviews the major contemporary models of business strategy for both domestic and international markets, and then focuses on the particular aspects of business strategy for companies operating from small markets. The course makes extensive use of case discussions to illustrate examples effective and less effective programs of strategy in organizations.

    • Organization Governance
      • This course reviews the major challenges in governance for both government organizations and businesses with publicly traded shares. Particular attention is also paid to the growing phenomenon of various types of external assessments or public ratings of the performance of governance in organizations.

    • Strategic Human Resource Management
      • This course focuses on the relationship between human resource management and strategy. Special emphasis is given to the strategic role of talent management and succession planning in assisting organizations to respond to rapidly increasing demands for change.

    Assessment

    • Attendance, in-class participation, completion of simulations and case-studies are required by all students to gain the Executive Certificate of Management.
    • Students who seek entry into the full MBA program are required to complete a 3,000 word paper. Students must successfully complete this paper to continue in the MBA programme
    • Students who elect not to continue into the MBA are not required to undertake the 3000 word assessment and will be awarded the Executive Certificate in Management if attendance and participation criteria are met.

    Materials for study

    All materials for the Executive Certificate are supplied to students.

    Cost of Executive Certificate in Management

    Cost is CI$8,200. This cost includes all materials and in-class simulations.

    Research Methods in Business & Management
    (2 month course commencing in June each year)

    Course Description

    Research Methods in Business & Management deals with research methods utilized in the Social Sciences- especially in Sociology, Political Science and Anthropology. The course covers qualitative and quantitative methods and examines a wide range of data collection methodologies including observation, questionnaire construction and controlled experimentation. This course enables students to develop an understanding of the types of questions and topics that can be addressed by the various research methods used by social scientists and the details of the operational steps in the research process.

    Assessment

    Assessment consists of a range of short papers relating to in-class topics and culminating in a research plan.

    Materials for study

    Students will be required to purchase a text book available from the UCCI book store.

    Cost of Research Methods in Business & Management

    Cost is $1,050 + cost of the text book.

    (September – December)

    Theory & Practice of Business & Management – 12 credits

    The second module offers students a range of topics. Students select three topics.

    Topics include:

    • Finance & Accounting
    • Offshore Financial Services
    • Administration in Public and Private Enterprise
    • International Marketing , OR
    • Human Resource Management (Students may select this topic as a stand-alone 12 credit specialization)

    Students attend academic classes in their chosen topics throughout this semester.

    Assessment

    Each topic will include a range of assessment tasks

    Materials for study

    Online journal articles will comprise the core of reading materials for these topics

    Cost of Theory & Practice of Business & Management

    Cost is $4,200

    (January-April)

    Applied Research in Business & Management – 12 credits

    The MBA culminates in a workplace based research project. Students will be supervised in small groups as they work through their individual research projects.

    Assessment

    Students are required to;

    • Give a presentation of research outcomes to faculty and students – 20%
    • Complete a literature review relevant to the topic – 20%
    • Conduct research and present outcomes in a research paper relevant to the topic – 60%

    Materials for study

    No additional materials are required. Students have access to the EBSCO Host online data base at no additional cost.

    Cost of Applied Research in Business & Management

    Cost is $4,200

Completion of the Degree

Students, who successfully complete all three modules of the programme, will be awarded the Master’s Degree in Business Administration from UCCI.

Total Cost of Masters Degree

The cost of the full Masters Degree is CI$17,650, plus $25 registration fee, external examination fees and text books as required. Stand-alone pricing is available for those interested in attending a particular module or sessions within a module.

Admission requirements

A Bachelor’s Degree is the entry requirement for the pMBA but consideration may be given to those who have experience in management roles but do not meet the entry requirements. This is termed Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Students in the RPL category will need to provide a resume and detailed statement giving reasons for pursuing this program. Each student entering under RPL will need to attend an interview for consideration for entry. Students must successfully complete the assessment paper as mentioned in Module 1.

You will need to register using UCCI's Student Information System. PLEASE NOTE: If you are not registered on the SIS in the required classes... you are not a student!

Additional Information

All classes are scheduled to suit a busy working professional. Classes are held at a range of times including evenings, Fridays and some Saturdays.
